The New Digital Divide
The rollout reveals a troubling pattern in how workplace technology gets deployed. Companies announce biometric requirements as optional security features, then gradually make them mandatory for full platform access. Gig workers—who lack employee protections and face constant competition for opportunities—find themselves with little choice but to comply.

The technology emerged from a genuine problem. Generative AI has made creating fake profiles, fraudulent job applications, and convincing scam operations trivially easy. Video platforms struggle with fake attendees that can participate in meetings, take notes, even ask questions—all without a human present.

The irony is sharp. Workers face displacement by AI in their actual jobs, then must prove they're not AI to access the jobs that remain. The technology meant to protect consumers from AI fraud ends up burdening workers with new compliance costs and privacy sacrifices.

What Comes Next
As iris scanning spreads, workers and advocates are pushing for guardrails. Some state legislatures are considering biometric privacy laws that would require explicit consent and limit data retention. But legislation moves slowly, and technology moves fast. By the time regulations catch up, iris scanning may be as normalized as submitting to background checks—another hoop workers must jump through, another dataset they must surrender, another way the balance of power tilts away from labor.
