Skoda's DuoBell is a bicycle bell designed to be heard by people wearing active noise-canceling headphones — a category that now includes most premium earbuds and over-ear models. According to Notebookcheck, the device uses a dual-frequency approach to outsmart ANC algorithms, which typically filter out environmental sounds including traditional bicycle bells.
The safety issue is real. ANC technology works by analyzing ambient noise and generating inverse sound waves to cancel it out. That's great for blocking engine rumble on planes or chatter in coffee shops. It's less great when it also muffles the ding of an approaching cyclist or the honk of a car horn.
How It Works
The DuoBell generates two distinct tones simultaneously. ANC systems are optimized to eliminate steady, predictable sounds — exactly what a standard bike bell produces. By layering frequencies, the DuoBell creates a more complex acoustic signature that's harder for noise-canceling algorithms to suppress completely.
