Sea level rise—up approximately 3.5 inches in South Florida since 1992—compounds storm surge threats, meaning an Andrew-strength hurricane today would likely push even more water inland than the original did.

South Florida's population has grown by roughly 50% since 1992, placing millions more people in harm's way. Miami-Dade County alone has added over 800,000 residents, many living in coastal areas vulnerable to storm surge.

Lessons Applied, Challenges Ahead

The improvements sparked by Andrew have undeniably made coastal communities more resilient. Modern building codes mean newer structures can withstand higher winds. Better forecasting gives residents more time to evacuate. Enhanced emergency management ensures faster response when disasters strike.

Yet significant vulnerabilities remain. Older housing stock built before updated codes still dots the landscape. Insurance availability and affordability have become critical issues in hurricane-prone states, with some major insurers pulling back from coastal markets. And as storms potentially grow stronger while seas rise higher, even post-Andrew standards may need continuous updating.

"Andrew showed us what's possible when we take preparedness seriously," noted disaster researcher Dr. Jennifer Collins of the University of South Florida. "But it also reminds us that preparing for yesterday's storms isn't enough. We need to prepare for tomorrow's."

As coastal communities face an increasingly volatile climate future, the lessons learned from that August day in 1992 remain as relevant as ever—a reminder that disaster preparedness isn't a one-time achievement but an ongoing commitment that must evolve with changing risks.
