But for labor economists, the more pressing question isn't whether AI investments will pay off for shareholders. It's what happens to workers caught between the hype and the eventual reckoning.
Dr. Jennifer Rothman, who studies technology displacement at MIT's Work of the Future initiative, sees troubling patterns. "Companies are making two simultaneous bets," she explained. "First, that AI will dramatically boost productivity. Second, that they can capture those gains by reducing headcount rather than sharing them with workers."

"If this is a bubble, the bursting won't look like 2000," Webb predicted. "It'll be more insidious. Companies will quietly scale back AI initiatives, write off investments, and be left with smaller workforces that they'll claim are 'right-sized.' The workers won't come back."
The Productivity Paradox
There's a deeper irony in the current moment. Even if AI delivers on its productivity promises, economic history suggests workers may not benefit proportionally. The "productivity paradox" of the 1970s and 80s saw computers enter the workplace without corresponding wage growth. More recently, the smartphone revolution created enormous value for tech companies while wages for most workers stagnated.
"Productivity and prosperity used to move together," Rothman said. "That link broke decades ago. There's no reason to think AI will magically restore it without intentional policy interventions."
Those interventions remain largely absent. While European regulators debate AI safety and algorithmic transparency, U.S. policymakers have offered little guidance on how AI productivity gains should be distributed. Proposals for worker retraining programs remain underfunded. Discussions of AI-driven unemployment insurance reforms haven't advanced beyond white papers.
Meanwhile, workers like Maria Chen are making their own calculations. After four months of job searching, she's found contract work at 60% of her previous salary. She's also learning to use the same AI tools that contributed to her layoff — not because she's excited about them, but because employers now expect it.

Buffett's 1999 warning wasn't that the internet wouldn't matter — it was that hype and value often diverge dramatically. The internet did transform everything, just as the automobile and airplane had before it. But transformation and profitability proved very different things, and the workers who built those industries often saw little of the wealth they created.
As AI valuations soar and investment dollars flow, the question isn't whether the technology will change how we work. It's whether those changes will benefit the people doing the work — or primarily those financing it.
For workers navigating this uncertainty, the answer may depend less on the technology itself than on who holds power when the inevitable correction comes.
