One of artificial intelligence's most respected voices has issued a stark warning: software developers have lost their grip on reality when it comes to AI capabilities, and the rest of society is heading down the same path.

Andrej Karpathy, the former director of AI at Tesla and founding member of OpenAI, has coined the term "AI Psychosis" to describe what he sees as a fundamental disconnect between how developers perceive AI systems and what those systems actually do. According to reporting by The New Stack, Karpathy believes this distorted perception has already taken hold among technical professionals — and is rapidly spreading to the general public.

The diagnosis is particularly significant given Karpathy's credentials. Unlike many AI commentators, he's spent years building the systems he's now critiquing, giving him an insider's perspective on both the technology's genuine capabilities and the hype surrounding it.

When the Builders Lose Perspective

"AI Psychosis," as Karpathy frames it, appears to describe a state where developers and users attribute capabilities to AI systems that simply don't exist — or conversely, fail to recognize genuine limitations that have serious real-world consequences.

This isn't about healthy optimism or forward-thinking vision. It's about a profession-wide inability to accurately assess what AI can and cannot do right now, today, in production environments where mistakes have consequences.

The phenomenon manifests in multiple ways. Developers might deploy AI systems in contexts where human judgment remains essential, trusting statistical pattern-matching where genuine reasoning is required. They might mistake a language model's confident-sounding output for actual knowledge, or confuse its ability to generate plausible text with understanding.

For security professionals, this psychological state creates immediate risks. An AI system that appears to understand code vulnerabilities might miss entire classes of exploits. A tool that seems to comprehend privacy regulations might generate compliance advice that's dangerously wrong. The gap between perception and reality becomes a attack surface.

From Silicon Valley to Main Street

What makes Karpathy's warning particularly urgent is his assertion that this condition isn't contained within the tech industry. According to The New Stack's coverage, he believes the general public is "next" — meaning non-technical users are beginning to develop similarly distorted perceptions of AI capabilities.

We're already seeing evidence of this spread. Consumers trust AI-generated health advice without verification. Business leaders make strategic decisions based on AI analysis they don't understand. Students submit AI-written work they haven't read, assuming it's accurate.

Each of these behaviors reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of what these systems are: sophisticated pattern-matching engines that generate statistically probable outputs, not reasoning entities that understand truth or context.

The security implications of widespread AI Psychosis extend beyond technical vulnerabilities. When users trust AI systems inappropriately, they create new vectors for manipulation, misinformation, and fraud. An attacker doesn't need to hack the AI — they just need to exploit the user's misplaced confidence in it.

The Trust Calibration Problem

At its core, AI Psychosis represents a failure of trust calibration. Humans are generally good at assessing the reliability of other humans and traditional software tools. We know when to double-check a colleague's work, when to verify a calculator's output, when to question an unusual result.

But AI systems break our calibration mechanisms. They produce outputs that look authoritative, sound confident, and appear to demonstrate understanding. Our evolved social instincts tell us to trust entities that communicate this way — even when those entities are statistical models with no understanding at all.

Developers, despite their technical knowledge, aren't immune to this calibration failure. They see AI systems pass tests, generate working code, and solve complex problems. The natural conclusion is that these systems "understand" — but that conclusion is psychologically compelling rather than technically accurate.

What This Means for Privacy and Security

For organizations handling sensitive data or making security-critical decisions, AI Psychosis poses direct operational risks.

Security teams might rely on AI code analysis tools without sufficient human review, missing vulnerabilities the AI wasn't trained to recognize. Privacy officers might trust AI-generated compliance assessments that misinterpret regulatory nuances. Incident response teams might accept AI-generated threat analysis that sounds authoritative but misses critical context.

The solution isn't to abandon AI tools — many provide genuine value when used appropriately. It's to develop what might be called "AI skepticism hygiene": systematic practices for questioning AI outputs, verifying conclusions, and maintaining human judgment in critical paths.

This means treating AI suggestions as starting points rather than conclusions. It means maintaining human expertise in domains where AI provides assistance. It means building verification steps into workflows that use AI tools.

The Industry's Responsibility

Karpathy's diagnosis, if accurate, suggests the AI industry has failed at a fundamental level: helping users develop accurate mental models of these systems.

Marketing materials promise AI that "understands" and "thinks." Product interfaces hide the statistical nature of these systems behind conversational interfaces. Documentation uses anthropomorphic language that reinforces misconceptions rather than correcting them.

When users develop AI Psychosis, they're not being irrational — they're responding rationally to misleading signals about what these systems are and how they work.

The tech industry has faced similar challenges before. Early internet users had to learn healthy skepticism about online information. Social media users had to develop instincts about misinformation and manipulation. Each wave of technology required new forms of literacy.

But AI may require something more difficult: the ability to simultaneously use powerful tools while maintaining constant awareness of their fundamental limitations. That's a cognitively demanding balance, and it's not clear humans are naturally good at it.

Beyond the Hype Cycle

Karpathy's warning comes at a moment when AI capabilities are genuinely expanding, making the calibration problem even harder. These systems are becoming more capable, which makes it increasingly difficult to draw the line between appropriate trust and AI Psychosis.

A developer who dismissed AI capabilities entirely a year ago might have been right. That same dismissive attitude today might be AI Psychosis in reverse — a refusal to recognize genuine advances. The psychological challenge is maintaining accurate perception while the underlying reality is shifting.

For those working in security and privacy, the path forward requires uncomfortable discipline: using AI tools while constantly questioning their outputs, recognizing their value while never fully trusting them, and maintaining the human expertise these systems are supposed to augment.

AI Psychosis, as Karpathy frames it, isn't a temporary condition that will resolve as the technology matures. It's an ongoing psychological challenge that comes with deploying systems that mimic understanding without possessing it. Recognizing that challenge is the first step toward managing it.

The question isn't whether AI will become part of our technical infrastructure — it already is. The question is whether we can maintain accurate perceptions of these systems while using them daily, or whether AI Psychosis becomes the new normal.
